The Rosary

Have you prayed the Rosary lately? If not, here’s a refresher course!

Pope Francis says: Praying the Rosary prepares our hearts to receive God's grace
and teaches us to place ourselves in the hands of God, allowing him to guide our steps
along the path of our faith journey. Praying the Rosary allows us to make room for
God, to glorify his name, and to make him truly present in our lives.

Praying the Rosary at St. John the Evangelist

Familiarize yourself and/or your group with the prayers of the Rosary (see below for the prayers).

We begin with the Memorare:   "Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary..."

You will now hear the leader recite the special intention prayers, including our Book of Hope, located near our statue of Mary inside the church.

Make the Sign of the Cross.

Holding the Crucifix, say the last part of Apostles' Creed. We join from "I believe in the Holy Spirit..."

On the first bead, the leader begins the Our Father, we join in on the last part "Give us this day our daily bread...".

Say three Hail Marys on each of the next three beads, leader starts and we come in on "Holy Mary, Mother of God..."

Leader begins the Glory Be, we come in on "As it was in the beginning..."

For each of the five decades, the leader announces the Mystery of the day, then begins the Our Father, we respond beginning with "Give us this day..."

While fingering each of the ten beads of the decade, next say ten Hail Marys leader starts and we come in on "Holy Mary, Mother of God..." while meditating on the Mystery.

Then say a Glory Be (we come in on "As it was in the beginning...").

After finishing each decade, we say the following Fatima prayer:"O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those who have most need of your mercy.")

After saying the five decades, say the "Hail, Holy Queen", followed by this dialogue and prayer:
V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.
R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Our responses

Memorare:

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known
that anyone who fled to thy protection,
implored thy help,
or sought thy intercession,
was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence
I fly unto thee,
O Virgin of virgins, my Mother.
To thee do I come,
before thee I stand,
sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions,
but in thy mercy hear and answer me.
Amen.

The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God,
the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
he descended into hell;
on the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;
from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.
Amen.

The Our Father

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass
against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

The Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;
blessed art thou amongst women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

The Glory Be (The Doxology)

Glory be to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end.
Amen.

The Hail Holy Queen (The Salve Regina)

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy,
our life, our sweetness, and our hope.
To thee we cry, poor banished children of Eve;
to thee we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Turn, then, most gracious advocate,
thine eyes of mercy toward us;
and after this, our exile,
show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary

V: Pray for us, O holy Mother of God

ALL: That we may be worthy of the promises of Christ.

Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.

Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil;

May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; And do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host,

by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all evil spirits

who prowl about the world seeking the ruination of souls. Amen."
